HOUSTON ART GALLERY

ARCH 201 // FALL 2011 // NEYRAN TURAN

My project explores the idea of manipulating elements within a black box to create an interesting and interactive experience between programs. I used changes in the ground and exterior voids within the building to create inter- building relationships. Additionally, the voids and surrounding plates create instances where you can see into spaces that you cannot access at that point. This creates necessary circulation through different spaces, emphasizing the way the building unfolds from the exterior black box to a web of program.

From the city, the building looks like a box with various punctures in the façade. The manipulation of ground becomes obvious first with a grand drop on one side of the site that leads people down under the building, channeling them in the direction of the auditorium and main exhibition spaces while creating a large gathering. From this underground courtyard, is the first view into the main voids- two main voids and then a series of branching voids that allow entrances, circulation, and gathering areas.

By angling the voids I created programmatic separations as well as distinctions between private a public areas. One main void is angled in so that all spaces are visible from each level, giving it a very public nature. Alternately, the second main void angles out so that top spaces are not visible to the lower ones. Internally, the voids open up or close of spaces, making them public or private in nature.
