PEI COBB FREED & PARTNERS

SEPTEMBER 2014 - AUGUST 2015 // NEW YORK CITY

During my year long precetorship, I had the opportunity to work with Pei Cobb Freed and Partners on the design teams of 4 diverse, award winning projects. I was integral in all phases of design from conceptual to construction and responsible for a wide range of production including curtain wall detail, drawings, competition models, renderings, and managing projects in construction administration.

Doha
BANK HEADQUARTERS PROPOSAL // DOHA, QATAR

Pei, Cobb, Freed and Partners competed for the design of the bank headquarters for a confidential client in Qatar. The goal of this project was to create an efficient, sustainable, and iconic form to expand with the clients quickly growing employee and customer base. With temperature averaging over 100 degrees, this building aims to protect from heat while serving as a symbol to Islam. It takes on a form that incorporates traditional Islamic art and architecture while remaining progressively bold, a jewel in this new desert development.

The proposed structure is a series of nested volumes with faces angling outwards, sheathed in a bronze-colored perforated metal screen. This nine-story array of interlocking triangular surfaces forms a dynamic facade that displays carefully integrated Islamic patterned screens, shielding the sloped glass curtain wall from Doha’s intense sun and heat while still allowing daylight into workspaces. At ground level, the screens touch down, interacting with the landscape and creating a shaded walkway to the entrances along all four sides. My main responsibility in the project involved designing and detailing the building envelope and screen.

The interior organization features two entrances- both private and public. The prinicple entrance leads into a ground floor lobby and a grand stair to the building’s semi-public mezzanine level, the lowest level of the eight-story, naturally light atrium. The grand stair cuts into the atrium along side a cascading water feature, bringing visitors to the central living room space of the building. The atrium serves as a passive strategy to remove heat and gain natural light while creating a dynamic heart of the building.

Spectrum Center
SPECTRUM CENTER // IRVINE, CALIFORNIA

The latest project in the string of a successful relationship between Pei Cobb Freed and Partners and this California based client, Spectrum Center is an office, retail, and residential development in Orange County, California. The firm's scope in the project includes 200 and 400 Spectrum  Center Drive, two office buildings and their adjacent parking structures. My involvement in 200 and 400 Spectrum Center followed the projects from concept through construction administration and completion.

Once completed, 200 and 400 Spectrum Center will be the tallest buildings in Orange County, California. These projects, although simple in form, are beautiful in detail, combining the best of pure geometry with refined design.  Clad in modern, linen-finish stainless steel and high-performance floor-to-ceiling Viracon Glass for energy efficiency and maximum daylighting, these towers stand above Orange Country with an ethereal lightness and crisp, clear detail incomparable to anything in the skyline.
